AI and Equality

Latin American Toolbox

In partnership with CENIA we’re working on delivering our methodology in Spanish with case studies from Latin America

We have partnered with the Chilean Centro Nacional de Inteligencia Artificial, CENIA,  to co-construct a Latin American Spanish language version of the validated <AI & Equality> Toolbox, with use cases relevant to the regional experience. The partnership builds on the learnings from the workshop structure and outreach from the African <AI & Equality> Toolbox to do so.

Translating and adapting tools like the <AI & Equality> Human Rights Toolbox can facilitate the co-creation of a common vocabulary and common understanding on the specific needs and challenges of each region of the world, unlocking informed debates about their visions for data with purpose and collaboratively finding examples of regional use cases of AI.

Objectives

  • Initial translation of the Toolbox Course to Spanish in consort with Women At The Table.
  • Workshops and research to  adapt the course to reflect regional issues, LatAm use cases for applied human rights-based approach and AI development.
  • New Spanish language LatAm Toolbox with use case studies and examples such as  Argentina’s prediction of school dropouts implemented in rural Salta, later deployed in Brazil (Ortiz Freuler, 2018), AlertaNiñez in Chile, detecting children and adolescents at risk (Venturini, 2019), and PretorIA, with its exploratory use of AI by the judiciary in Colombia and Argentina (Oquendo, 2020) to name a few not included in master AI & Equality Human Rights Toolbox due to space and focus constraints.

Our work

  • Initial translation of the Toolbox Course to Spanish in consort with Women At The Table. Editing and interpretation of technical aspects is currently underway.
  • Research of regional case studies that highlight the way biases can be strengthened or corrected using AI tools.
  • Conducting workshops and interactive discussions with a range of organizations, disciplines and sectors to scope relevant themes and issues and collection of use cases from, relevant to, and rooted in Latin America.
  • Participation in Congreso Futuro, Chile’s and Latin America’s biggest science and technology event.
